Zoya Mod Mattes

Zoya's Summer 2011 Collection, Mod Mattes

I recently purchased one of Zoya's summer collection release, Mod Mattes. The collection includes three fun and bright summer shades with Zoya's matte finish. They retail for $8 a bottle, but they are an environmentally friendly company, and the the shades are quite cute. What I thought was nice about this release was that they came out with a mini sampler package, with includes all three shades in a smaller bottle, for just $15! I would have gotten that instead, but I personally prefer larger bottles. That's just me, though. ^^;

Left to Right: Lolly, Mitzi, & Phoebe

They put two stickers on the bottom of my bottle of Phoebe for some reason... lol. Anyway, their matte polishes come in a really neat frosted bottle, with a matte cap. I don't know why, but for some odd reason, I really like and prefer the feel of the frosted glass bottles as opposed to their original bottles. It just looks and feels so nice! Haha. :P

You might be thinking to yourself now, "Enough pictures!" right? Okay, okay. Here come the swatches now. (: Oh yea, I want to apologize in advance for the flash photos. They are ridiculously flashed out! My bad ^^;

First, I have Lolly. This polish is a fabulously bright magenta pink matte. I really like this color. It definitely reminds me of summer. This one was the most opaque of the three for me. Here it's shown in two coats, with no base coat or top coat, expect for the one labeled "with top coat." Lol. ;P I think this shade looks gorgeous either matte or shiny. Maybe if you have OPI's La Paz-itively Hot Matte, you could skip out on this, but I think La Paz matte is much deeper in tone. I don't have to it compare, unfortunately.

Mitzi in natural light

Mitzi is a yellow-y lime green color, a little bit odd. I think it's right about in between the shades of OPI's Fiercely Fiona and Who the Shrek Are You? This shade is also pretty darn bright. I think it's a fun and a great shade to pick up for the summer. It's not totally unique (I think Illamasqua also came out with a similar color at the same time), but it does offer that really nice matte finish Zoya makes. I really like it, personally. However, it was a bit streaky (as I find many yellow & light green polishes are). Here I've shown it in four coats, although if you have more even application, you could cut it down to three. Obviously, no base or top coat except for the one labeled "top coat." :P

Last but certainly not least, is Phoebe. This nail polish is bright blue matte with fine shimmer. The blue is so bright, I might even say it's close to cyan blue. Maybe I'm wrong... anyways, this color is really great. With blue being my favorite and whatnot, I really like this polish! The shimmer is an added bonus. Here it's shown in three coats, no base or top coat. The swatch with the top coat though, is pretty fantastic too! It really brings out the shimmer. Fab. Pick up this shade.

Overall, I'm really enjoying this collection. The shades are bright and fun, and they really do give that that "retro/mod" afterthought when looking at them. I love that they have Zoya's matte texture, which isn't purely flat. It's velvety, which brings interest and dimension to the shades. I also like the way they look with top coat! Versatile, yay. (: I'll definitely be rocking these polishes all summer long (most likely on my toes, as I change my manicures too often!) Definitely pick these up with you have the money to spare. It would also make a great end-of-the-school-year treat for all you students out there like me! Can't wait for finals to come and be over with. (: What do you guys think of this collection? ^__^~

Disclaimer: These polishes were purchased on my own.

  3. What bright and fun colors!

    What do you think about wearing the polishes matte as they are? When I get matte polishes I like to put a matte top coat instead of shiny since otherwise I feel like it defeats the purpose of it!

  4. @ frostedsnow - I'll post this here and also on your blog XD I think wearing matte polishes as they are is the best way to go about, even though it can chip within a day. That's how I prefer and usually go about with my mattes. However, I've never actually tried putting a matte top coat on top. Some that own (namely elf's) changes the texture to a different type of matte, but I also have cnd's and china glaze's which I haven't tested out yet. I'll get back to you when I do! :D

  5. haha thanks for doing both! =p

    Oh I meant matte polishes 'as they are' as in with matte top coat as well. Actually what I meant was to keep it matte =p Actually I used to think the same as you and I was gonna put a shiny top coat on my matte polish but then my unnie suggested matte top coat and I loved how it looked and it didnt change the texture much for me! It might be cuz my matte polish and top coat were both the same brand -- missha I think. Maybe I can review that some time!

    you also let me know what matte polishes you like. i kinda wanna stock on them, but I find polishes back home so much more pricey compared to Korea! T_T
